Film Insurance
One of the most important aspects in the making of a film is the implementation of insurance that will adequately protect the particular production. Listed below is a brief synopsis of the various types of cover available.
FILM PRODUCERS INDEMNITY
Provides a cover for the additional costs incurred due to death, disability, accident or illness of nominated personnel who are imperative to the continuation of the Production e.g. Director, Lead cast, Director of Photography etc. Cover indemnifies the production company. Nominated personnel must pass a medical examination.
NEGATIVE FILM RISK
Covers additional costs incurred due to loss of, or damage to, the negative/tape of the production. Also provides cover for the risks of faulty stock, camera and processing (where most claims occur) and damage or loss whilst in transit
PUBLIC LIABILITY
Protection is provided to the Insured for claims made against it for death &/or bodily injury &/or property damage to third parties as a result of the insured’s acts of negligence. Please note that subcontractors (freelancers, independent contractors, etc) are not automatically covered. Prior arrangement must be made with Underwriters to cover the liability of sub-contractors.
MULTI RISKS
This section of the policy provides cover for material damage (including Fire, Theft, Accidental and Malicious Damage and Damage whilst in transit) to cameras, lighting and electrical equipment, props, sets and wardrobe. Can be extended to include office contents whilst being used on the production.
EXTRA EXPENSE
Protects the production company for increased costs incurred due to loss of, or damage to, props sets and/or facilities. In other words provides protection to cover the costs of delays caused by material damage
MONEY
Covers money that the production company is responsible for in the course of making a production
ERRORS & OMISSIONS
Protects the production company and distributors for claims/suits for libel, slander, defamation, plagiarism, breach of copyright, invasion of privacy, theft of rights and includes the legal fees incurred in the defence of the claim. Clearance procedures and title report required. Distributors in the USA will demand this cover.
The above is a summary only. Other covers of course may be required including workers compensation, motor vehicle, personal accident (for voluntary workers), marine, livestock, aviation and aviation liability.
